Maggie

Tellus directed me to an alcove on the side of the cave near the pool. A table and two chairs sat there, along with a small kitchenette. She smiled at me, pointing at a chair, before pouring ice tea into two large glasses.

“I bet you have always wondered about your life, haven’t you, Maggie? Why your parents were like they were?”

I nodded, dazed with this woman who was an ancient dragon. I had thought all the older ones were asleep.

She must have picked up my thoughts because she laughed. “Ah, yes. James. He is a special boy. He has thought we were all asleep. In reality, we are just resting our eyes, waiting for the next generation to get off their asses and figure out why the Gods put dragons on this earth. He needs to find his way.” Her face became serious. “This is his battle and yours. We cannot help much this time. What I can do is help you make sense of your life. Then together, you and James and all of your friends can deal with what is coming.”

“Why can’t you help us?” The words burst out and I blushed, placing a hand over my mouth. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to say that.”

She gave me a look. “Yes, you did. Don’t apologize for honest questions, Maggie.” She sat and looked out over the pool, which stretched out into the horizon. Wait, did they have horizons in caves? I couldn’t see where it ended. “This time needs a special grouping. The grouping that Artemis has been telling you about. Us older dragons? We are not the right ones to fight this time. Besides, the world is not ready for us to come back yet. Humans are not ready.”

Okay, I could see that. A dragon flying over Boston or New York City would definitely cause a ruckus.

I got things back on track. “So, tell me why my parents were like they were.”

Tellus sighed, the exhalation smelling like the richest dirt mixed with green vegetation. My eyes widened as I leaned a little forward. I loved the smell of the earth. I just had forgotten how much. Perhaps I had some sort of weird affinity with Earth.

The dragon smiled at me and then started. “Everyone thought your mother was a King Maker. We know your line through your mother’s side births King Makers. There had been a foretelling about one coming and the family had thought she was going to be it, but I am not sure what went wrong. The ability skipped her, as things sometimes happen when abilities come from the Gods. Your father had mated with her, hoping she either still had the potential of becoming one or that she could birth one. When she didn’t become one, they had you. Their first disappointment was that you were a girl. They thought the ability would pass on to a male of your line, but they were wrong.”

Tellus snorted, before taking a long drink of her tea.

“They tried to have another, a boy, but they couldn’t do that either.
